For the International Film Festival Rotterdam FLATarchitects, in collaboration with stage designer Theun Mosk, designed Elastic Minute, a temporary pavilion on the city square Schouwburgplein. The pavilion includes a last minute ticket shop, a coffee shop, an information desk and a filmic installation. These functions are accommodated inside three storage containers embraced by a skin consisting of aluminum tubes and elastic band.
The exterior of the removable containers is painted in the colors of the festival. Behind the double doors carefully executed wooden counters are hidden. The design allows the containers to be compactly stored and reused every year in the same or a different arrangement. The surfaces of the surrounding skin are all differently shaped. Therefore elastic band, usually used in clothing, serves as an ideal material for wrapping the aluminum frame. With no more than three basic lengths of elastic band attached to on another with Velcro, every possible surface could be created.
The open pattern of intersectingblack and red lines defines the inner areabetween the three containers, yet thearea stays visible for passersby. Froma distance the lighting design and thesoundtracks of Touki Delphine attractattention.
The installation is housed inside the pink container, which is elevated by a steel frame allowing the visitors to enter from beneath. Inside they can take a view of the city square looking through a pink periscope. The peri- scope adds filmic layers to the view which can also be manipulated byoperating a smoke and sound machine.
A fourth, separate, red container together with a fence of aluminum tubes and elastic band, serves as a temporary bike park on the square. All together 850 meters of elastic band were used for both the last minute shop and the bike park.
